CHATTOGRAM, April 15, 2025 (BSS) - A Chattogram court here today ordered that 11 individuals already in custody for the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif be shown arrested in a separate case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.

Chattogram's Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate SM Alauddin Mahmud issued the order at around 11:30 am following an application submitted by the investigating officer of the case.

The accused are Premanandan Das, 19, Ranab Das, 24, Bidhan Das, 29, Bikash Das, 24, Rumit Das, Raj Kapur, 55, Samir Das, 25, Shiv Kumar Das, 23, Om Das, 26, Ajay Das, 30, and Debi Charan, 36.

All accused are residents of Sebok Colony in the city's Bandel Road area. They were earlier arrested and sent to jail in connection with the murder of lawyer Alif.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury confirmed the court order and said that police sought permission to show the arrestees as accused in the explosives case filed by Khan Alam, the brother of the slain lawyer.

Lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was brutally killed on November 26, 2024, during a violent clash near the Chattogram court premises.

The unrest erupted after the court rejected bail for Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON leader and spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, in a sedition case filed at Kotwali police station.

Amid the violence, Alif was fatally hacked to death. The Chattogram Bar Association held ISKCON supporters responsible for the attack.

Alif's father, Jamal Uddin, later filed a murder case against 31 individuals, while his brother Khan Alam lodged another case under the Explosive Substances Act against 116 people for vandalism and assault during the unrest.
