DHAKA, April 16, 2025 (BSS) - A delegation of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami led by its Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman today met visiting US Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Nicole Ann Chulick at a residence in the city's Gulshan this afternoon.
"They wanted to know about the current political situation in Bangladesh. They enquired about the timing of the next elections and how the electoral process would be conducted. They also sought information on possible reforms," said Shafiqur Rahman while talking to journalists after the meeting.
Mentioning that the Jamaat leaders had an open discussion with the envoy, Shafiqur Rahman said that they wanted to know about the economic and foreign policies of the Jamaat if the party is given the responsibility of running the state in the future. They also showed interest in various regional and local issues.
"We discussed all these matters with them openly," he said.
"We had conversations with them about minority, women's and labour rights issues also," he said.
He said that they had requested the envoy to convey the request of Bangladesh to reconsider recently imposed 37-percent tariff on Bangladesh.
The Jamaat Ameer said, "We practice democracy within our party and want to practice democracy in our country as well. For this, we will do whatever is required."
Mentioning that his party wants the next election to be held in a fair and transparent manner, he said, "We have reiterated this several times."
"It will be preferable if the election takes place before the next Ramadan," he said.
Jamaat Secretary General Professor Golam Parwar, central executive committee member Mobarak Hossain and Jamaat Ameer's foreign affairs adviser Professor Dr Mahmudul Hasan, among others, were present at the meeting.
