DSCC demolished all illegal shops at Sohrawardy Udyan

DHAKA, May 15, 2025(BSS)-The South City Corporation (DSCC) today demolished all illegal shops from different parts of the Sohrawardy Udyan.

The demolition drive started from the gate of the udyan near the Teachers and Students Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University led by its Executive Magistrate Md Aminul Islam.

The executive magistrate during the drive told BSS that the Sohrawardy Udyan is a national park for commoners.

"We have evicted all the illegal establishments including shops from the udyan to ensure safe visit of all people and their uninterrupted movement," he said.

The DSCC launched the drive following a demand from different students' organizations of Dhaka University after the tragic murder of a Chatra Dal leader near the 'Mukta Mancha' in the udyan on Tuesday midnight.

Shahriar Alam Shammo, was a postgraduate student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) and a Chhatra Dal leader of Sir A F Rahman Hall unit.
The Dhaka University administration and the concerned authorities of the Sohrawardy Udyan held a joint meeting yesterday to ensure safety and security of the students in the campus area. Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Adviser to the interim government Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan was present at the meeting. The meeting took seven important decisions in this regard.

After the meeting, the adviser on his verified Facebook page wrote these decisions. The decisions are-the gate behind the Razu Vaskarjo will be closed permanently and all illegal establishments would be evicted soon. The meeting also decided that the Public Works Ministry, City corporation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) will launch a joint drive and will form a committee comprising representatives from all stakeholders. A dedicated police box will be set up in the udyan and none will be allowed to enter into the udyan after 8pm.

The LGRD Adviser also assured of implementing these decisions immediately to make the park a safe place to visit . He also sought cooperation from the university administration and the students in this regard.
