DHAKA, May 20, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan today demanded quick trial of "fascists" as they committed crimes against the countrymen.

"Real leaders of fascism have committed crimes against countrymen. They must be tried very quickly," he told a discussion at Jatiya Press Club here.

Jatiya Ganotantrik Party (JAGPA) organized the discussion titled "Establishment of democracy, protection of independence-sovereignty and role in the movement against Indian authoritarianism" on the occasion of the eighth death anniversary of its founding president Shafiul Alam Pradhan.

Nazrul said BNP long ago wrote to the government demanding forming another tribunal to try the "fascist forces".

"How long the people will wait for restoring democracy," he questioned.

"The people of Bangladesh sacrificed their lives for their mother tongue and establishing democracy . . . the people embraced martyrdom for achieving independence of the country. Despite these supreme sacrifices, we are waiting still for restoring democracy," Nazrul added.

Nazrul Islam Khan said it is another crime to confront reforms and elections as democracy itself is a reform.

The BNP leader said, "Reform and democracy are not contradictory to each other. They are complementary. That is why we say, there must be justice, there must be reforms, there must be elections, and everything must be done as quickly as possible."

Jagpa President Khandaker Lutfar Rahman presided over the event and Vice President MA Wahab moderated it.

Jatiya Dal's Syed Ehsanul Huda, NDP's Qari Abu Taher, Samyabadi Dal's Syed Nurul Islam, Jagpa Presidium Members Khandaker Abidur Rahman, ASM Mizbah Uddin, Rakib Uddin Chowdhury Munna, Central Leaders Awlad Hossain Shilpi, Anwar Hossain, Rokon Uddin Hazari, Dhaka Metropolitan City President Hossain Mubarak and General Secretary MA Shahin, among others, spoke.
