DHAKA, May 20, 2025 (BSS) - A sub-committee has been formed to strengthen the security of Suhrawardy Udyan, one of Dhaka's most significant historical sites.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting held on Tuesday to discuss the development and security of the park.

The meeting, held in the conference room of the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, was chaired by Shakila Jerin, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

Dhaka University Proctor, Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, has been appointed convener of the newly formed sub-committee. The committee has been tasked with submitting its recommendations within the next three days.

In parallel, another sub-committee has been formed to spearhead the beautification of Suhrawardy Udyan, aiming to transform it into a tranquil and welcoming public space, similar to Ramna Park.

Representatives from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Dhaka South City Corporation, Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, Department of Narcotics Control, Kali Temple Authority, Bangla Academy and Dhaka University were present in the meeting.

In response to a request from the Dhaka University administration, a recent drive was carried out at Suhrawardy Udyan to evict floating people and unauthorized vendors from the premises. Besides, daily anti-drug operations are ongoing there.

To enhance security, 24 CCTV cameras have already been installed across the Udyan, along with 85 newly added lamps to ensure adequate nighttime lighting.

Plans are also underway to establish two camps for the Department of Narcotics Control and the police.

Additionally, the number of deployed Ansar members in the park has been increased to 40, significantly boosting on-site security and surveillance.
