AL leader Amu's cousin Rahat sent to jail in murder attempt case

DHAKA, May 23, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sent to jail Dr Khandokar Md Rahat Hossain, a maternal cousin of Awami League (AL) leader Amir Hossain Amu, in a case lodged over attempt to murder one Jahirul Islam during the July mass-uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Zonayed passed the order as police produced Rahat before the court and pleaded to keep him behind bars till the end of probe in the case.

A team of Detective Branch (DB) of Police on May 22 arrested Dr Khandokar Rahat Hossain, 57, from the capital's airport area. 

According to the case documents, Jahirul joined a protest rally brought out by anti-discrimination student movement in Rampura area on July 22. At around 3pm, AL cadres attacked the rally, injuring many agitators. Jahirul got shot in the attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he underwent treatment.

He filed the case on February 11 last with the Rampura Police Station.
