CHATTOGRAM, May 24, 2025 (BSS) - Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain today said that waterlogging in Chattogram city will decrease to 50-60 percent in the current monsoon.

He mentioned that the excavation and cleaning work of the city's Barai Canal under the City Corporation is almost 90 percent complete. The remaining work will be completed soon. Once it is completed, the city's residents will get some benefit from the long-standing water logging issue during this monsoon season.

Dr Shahadat said these while speaking as chief guest at a seminar titled "Role of Civil Society and Media in Solving Waterlogging in Chattogram City" organized by Bangladesh Jana Sanyog Samity- Chattogram unit at the City Corporation conference room this afternoon.

President of Bangladesh Jana Sanyog Samity- Chattogram unit Abhik Osman presided over the function while Bhuiyan Nazrul, bureau chief of Dainik Desh Rupantor presented the main article at the seminar.

Mentioning the need for coordinated efforts by the city government, Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said, "All responsible institutions in Chattogram must work together to resolve the waterlogging issue in the city. I have always given importance to the city government since the beginning of my tenure."

I have even informed the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, about this. To effectively solve waterlogging and implement all city projects, we must involve the city government, he added.

Dr Shahadat urged to the media workers and civil society to inform where water is accumulating to facilitate water drainage work.

He stated "We will consider these issues during the rainy season. In many parts of the city, water levels are rising due to dams built under the supervision of the army. If these dams are opened in future and water rises again, we investigate further," he added.

We must face the challenge, not ignore it. If we fail to identify the causes, waterlogging will persist. Therefore, the media should highlight the causes of waterlogging in front of everyone.

Premier University VC Prof S. M. Noshrul Kadir, Chattogram WASA Managing Director Muhammad Anwar Pasha, Central President of Jana Sanyog Samity A. S. M. Bazlul Haque, professional leader Dr. Khurshid Jamil Chowdhury, Dr. AKM Fazlul Haque, Member Secretary of Chattogram Press Club Zahidul Karim Kochi, President of Chattogram Metropolitan Union Mohammad Shah Nowaz, Chattogram centre Chairman of IEB Engineer Manzare Khorshed Alam and Dr. Shahidul Haque of CU among others addressed the function.
