ACC files corruption cases against ex-whip Swapon, his wife

DHAKA, May 25, 2025(BSS) - The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) today filed two cases against former whip of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapon and his wife Mehbuba Alam for their alleged involvement in acquiring assets and properties beyond their known sources of income.

ACC Deputy Director (DD) Public Relations told BSS that the commission approved a prayer for filing separate cases against Swapon and his wife this morning and the cases have already lodged against them.

According to the allegations available with the commission officials, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapon, former lawmaker from Joypurhat-2 constituency and whip of the Jatiya Sangsad, has acquired and possessed assets worth about Taka 1,26,58,850 that is contrary to his known source of income. Besides, he made unusual and suspicious transactions of Taka 653,16,90,970 through 28 bank accounts with his own name, joint and other establishments.

The commission has approved a prayer for filing a case against him under section 27(1) of the ACC Act-2004, sub-sections 2 and 3 under section 4 of the Money Laundering Prevention Act-2012 and under section 5(2) of the Corruption Prevention Act-1947, the ACC DD said, adding that he has already transferred, handed over and converted the illegally gained assets and properties.

Besides, Mehbuba Alam, wife of the former lawmaker, has illegally acquired and possessed assets worth about Taka 2,22,36,828 that is also contrary to her known source of income. The ACC, that is why, filed a case against Mehbuba Alam and her husband Swapon under section 27(1) of the ACC Act 2004 and section 109 of Bangladesh Penal Code (BPC).
