COX'S BAZAR, May 25, 2025 (BSS) - Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) Director General Faruk Wasif has said that journalism in the country has been absent for the past 15 years, resulting in a lack of accountability and a weakened democracy.

"If proper journalism and mechanisms of accountability had been allowed to function, democracy would have taken root in this country," he said.

But over time, like other pillars of the state, the media was also captured by partisans and corrupt individuals who aligned themselves with the powerful against the country, he added.

He was addressing as the chief guest at the certificate distribution ceremony of a three-day training workshop on Multimedia Journalism, organized by PIB in Cox's Bazar today.

Cox's Bazar Press Club President Mahbubur Rahman, senior journalists Aminul Haque Chowdhury and Abu Siddique Osmani also spoke.
