JASHORE, June 16, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sent former vice chancellor (VC) of the Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) Prof Dr Abdus Sattar to jail in a corruption case.

District and Sessions Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam, also the Senior Special Judge of the district, passed the order when Dr Sattar surrendered to the court in the case.

Sirajul Islam, Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Jashore told BSS that Dr Sattar along with two other accused of the case surrendered to the court and prayed for bail.

The court after hearing the arguments of both the sides ordered to send him to jail rejecting his bail prayer.

The other two accused of the case is Deputy Director (Planning and Development) of the university Abdur Rouf and former pro-vice chancellor (Pro-VC) of the Islamic University Kushtia Dr Kamal Uddin.

The court also granted the bail petitions of Abdur Rouf and Dr Kamal Uddin as they earlier obtained bail from the same court, Islam said.

According to the court sources, the ACC on August 21 in 2023 lodged a case against three persons for their alleged involvement in illegal appointment and misappropriation of Taka 61,31,732 from the university.

The ACC alleged that a three-member recruitment committee headed by Dr Sattar tried to recruit the accused Abdur Rouf as Assistant Director (AD) Planning and Development following a circular in 2009 but failed as Rouf had no previous experience for the post.

As a result, the committee comprising Dr Sattar, former lawmaker from Jashore-3 constituency Khaledur Rahman Tito and former Pro-VC of Islamic University Dr Kamal Uddin recommended appointing Abdur Rouf as Section Officer (Grade-1) Planning and Development without any circular and defying all sorts of recruitment rules of the university.

The ACC also alleged that accused Abdur Rouf, now Deputy Director (Planning and Development) from 2009 to June, 2022 received Taka 61,31,732 from the university as salary and allowances that is also misappropriation of public money.

The anti-graft body recently submitted charge sheet against Dr sattar and Dr Kamal Uddin at the court discharging former lawmaker Khaledur Rahman Tito as he died earlier.
