Bus driver's assistant held over rape on moving bus in Habiganj

HABIGANJ, June 17, 2025 (BSS) - The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the bus driver's assistant on charges of raping a college student on a moving bus last night within 24 hours of filing case. 

A RAB-9 team comprising the members of Sylhet Sadar Company and Shayestaganj camp conducted a joint raid at South Surma at around 12:00 midnight last night and arrested Liton Miah (26), the helper of the bus.

Additional Superintendent of Police AKM Shahidul Islam Sohag and Media Officer of RAB-9 said arrested Liton Miah is the son of Nuru Miah of Rashidpur village under Biswanath upazila of Sylhet district. 

Earlier, they arrested the driver of the bus Sabbir Miah (27), son of Fakir Ali of Enatabad village under Kurshi union of Nabiganj upazila.

Nabiganj police said the victim is a resident of Baniachang upazila of the district but currently residing at Tejgaon area of the capital along with her family members. 
The victim on Sunday boarded on a Baniachang bound Bilash Paribahan bus from Dhaka.

 The driver and helper of the bus took her to Sylhet as she was sleeping, police said. The victim later boarded to another bus of Ma Paribahan from Sylhet to go to Baniachang. 

All the passengers of the bus got down at different stoppages and finally the driver and helper repeatedly raped the victim at Sherpur area, police said.

On hearing the hue and cry of the woman, people of Auskandi area called the army and police personnel and caught the driver of the bus at Chhalamatpur area and handed over him to police. 

They also rescued the women from the bus but its helper however, managed to escape from the scene.

The woman filed a case with Nabiganj police accusing the driver of the bus Sabbir Miah and its helper Liton Miah on Monday. The victim was later admitted to Habiganj Modern Hospital for treatment.
