CHANDPUR, June 17, 2025 (BSS) - The district administration wants to fix the price of hilsa in southern districts including Chandpur.

In this regard, Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin Uddin has written to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

A letter signed by the deputy commissioner in this regard reached the media on Tuesday.

The letter mentions that since ancient times, hilsa from the Padma and Meghna rivers of Chandpur has been very tasty and incomparable in terms of quality. In view of this, in 2017, the government recognized Chandpur district as the first district in Bangladesh to be branded as 'Chandpur, the Home of Hilsa'.

Taking advantage of the delicious and unique taste of hilsa, some unscrupulous traders in Chandpur and neighboring districts are raising the price as per their wish, which is completely beyond the reach of the buyers.

Even the local residents of Chandpur complain that due to the high price, hilsa is going beyond their purchasing power.

Chandpur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Mohsin Uddin said that a letter has been sent to the ministry to determine the price of the national fish Hilsa, showing the real picture. At the same time, a request has been made to look into the matter seriously.

In addition to Chandpur, Hilsa is caught in many other coastal districts including Barishal, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Laxmipur, Bhola, Noakhali, Baraguna, Jhalakathi.

Fishermen do not have any production costs for Hilsa produced in rivers or seas. Even then, the price of Hilsa is controlled by unscrupulous traders and syndicates.

Chandpur Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mirza Omar Faruk said that the Fisheries Department stores information on Hilsa supply throughout the year. If a company wants to know the price, the market price at that time is given.
