DHAKA, June 30, 2025(BSS) - Police today arrested an old man from Jhalkathi district for killing weaver birds (Babui pakhi) and damaging their nests and eggs.
Police following a case filed by the forest department arrested Mobarak Ali Fakir,70, from his Goaton village of Shekherhat union under Jhalkathi Sadar Upazila.
A case has been filed against three persons with the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jhalkathi under Wildlife Conservation and Security Act-2012, according to a press release issued by the ministry of environment, forest and climate change.
Besides, a member of Shekherhat union also filed a case against them with Jhalkathi Sadar Thana.
The accused people on June 27 cut a palm tree from a government land by the side of a road where many weaver birds made their nests.
Local conscious people requested the accused persons not to cut the palm tree as there were many nests with eggs and baby birds but they did not pay heed to them. As a result, 47 nests with 96 baby birds and 24 eggs were completely damaged.
The department of forest and local police are trying to nab the other accused. The department has already planted new saplings of palm tree at the same place and launched campaign for creating awareness on conservation of wildlife.
Secretary to the ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Farhina Ahmed said that stern actions will be taken against the killers of wildlife and damaging their nests.
