FENI, July 8, 2025 (BSS) - Due to two days of downpours and onrush of water from the Indian hills, five places of the flood control dam have breached in Feni inundating large areas of Parashuram and Fulgazi upazilas of the district.
Water has accumulated in various areas of Feni city due to continuous rains throughout the day, causing water-logging while the main roads of the district town went under water. Water is also entering shops and houses in low-lying areas.
Water Development Board sources said that the water of the Muhuri river is flowing 137 cm above the danger level. The abnormal increase in water has created a flood situation, it said.
The flood control dam has breached at two places in Jangalghona and one in Gadanagar, Derpara, and Sahebnagar.
District Meteorological Office in-charge Mojibur Rahman said the highest rainfall of the year was recorded in 24 hours from 6 pm on Monday to 6 pm on Tuesday.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department's Feni station recorded 440 millimeters of rainfall during this time. There is a possibility of light to moderate rainfall in the next two days.
Meanwhile, most areas of the town have been submerged in water due to very heavy rain.
Shaheed Shahidullah Kaiser Road, Shanti Company Road, Pathanbari Road, Academy, Masterpara, Sahadevpur, Old Police Quarter, Mizanpara, Nazir Road, Birinchi, Barahipur areas are floating in water up to two to four feet.
Former municipality councilor Omar Faruk Bhuiyan Belal said that most of the canals and reservoirs of the municipality have been illegally occupied and various structures have been built, which is hindering the flow of water. Due to this, water accumulates whenever it rains.
Municipality Administrator and Deputy Director of Local Government Department Golam Mohammad Baten said that the municipality's drains have been cleaned since before the monsoon season.
Similarly, the drive to clear the canals of illegal encroachments is ongoing, he said. However, due to sudden heavy rains, the water is receding slowly, he added.
He said that six teams of the municipality have been working since night. He expressed hope that the water will recede quickly if the rainfall decreases.
Feni Water Development Board Executive Engineer Akter Hossain Majumder said that the flood control dam has broken at 5 places due to the pressure of heavy rains and water from the Indian mountain slopes. The water of the Muhuri, Kahua and Silonia rivers is flowing above the danger level.
Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam said the water continues to rise.
He visited the affected areas of Fulgazi-Parshuram along with Police Superintendent Md. Habibur Rahman and Water Development Board officials.
He instructed the Water Development Board officials to take necessary measures immediately.
He urged them to inform if anyone needs shelter or dry food anywhere.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Ismail Hossain said that considering the flood situation, 32 secondary schools and 67 primary schools have been prepared in Fulgazi upazila and 32 shelter centers in Parashuram upazila.
