DHAKA, Sept 9, 2025 (BSS) - Individuals who are 16 years of age or older are now eligible to apply for and obtain the National Identity Card (NID) while the Election Commission (EC) has withdrawn the requirement of submitting a General Diary (GD) in cases of lost NID.

EC Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed announced it today while talking to media at Election Building in the capital's Agargaon area.

He said, "A recent decision now permits individuals who have reached the age of 16 to register for the NID. This initiative enables us to preserve preliminary data in advance."

Mentioning that the NID is essential for a wide range of services, including students pursuing education abroad, opening bank accounts, and accessing medical care, he said, "Many citizens often encounter challenges due to incomplete documentation. With this new provision, anyone aged 16 and above is now eligible to apply for the NID."

Besides, highlighting a key procedural change of GD requirement, the EC Senior Secretary said, "Previously, citizens had to file a GD to replace a lost NID. We have removed this requirement."

He added, "People often face inconvenience and time constraints. Now, a second NID card can be obtained without a GD, making the process faster and easier."

The EC took the decision to eliminate the GD requirement to reduce public suffering and ensure more efficient service delivery.

According to EC sources, under the NID correction crash programme, the commission processed 907,662 correction applications in the first six months of 2025. During the same period, a total of 984,356 applications were submitted.

The initiative has significantly reduced citizens' difficulties regarding NID corrections, said Akhtar Ahmed.
