DHAKA, Sept 09, 2025 (BSS) - World Suicide Prevention Day will be observed tomorrow across the country as elsewhere in the world.
The day has been observed on September 10 every year since 2003 in many countries through various programmes.
The International Association for Suicide Prevention, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health jointly observe the day.
This year, the theme is ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’.
A Lancet study found that in 1990, 8.1 people per 100,000 in Bangladesh committed suicide, while in 2021 the number declined to 3.66. A total of 6,050 people committed suicide in Bangladesh in 2021.
The National Survey (2022-23) was conducted by the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) with financial support from the Non-Communicable Disease Control Programme of the Directorate General of Health Services.
Marking the day, a rally, seminar and photography competition will be jointly organized by the Bangladesh Association of Psychiatrists (BAP), Bangladesh Medical Students Society (BMSS), the Department of Psychiatry of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Professor Dr Md Sayedur Rahman is expected to attend the programme as the chief guest.
