Fugitive life-term convict fled from jail during July Uprising held in city

DHAKA, Sept 11, 2025 (BSS) - A life sentence awarded fugitive convict in a gang rape case, who escaped from Kashimpur Jail during July Uprising, has been arrested from the capital's Bhatara area.

The arrestee has been identified as Saikat Mia (22), a fugitive convict serving a life sentence in a case of gang rape of a 13-year-old minor girl.

A squad of RAB-1 arrested Saikat in front of the 1st passenger shelter of Expressway under DMP Dhaka Bhatara Police Station around 12am today, said a RAB press release.

He escaped from the prison in collusion with other prisoners during the July Uprising in 2024 by breaking the prison gate and taking the prison guards hostage.

Later, a case was registered against the convicted fugitive accused Saikat and other fugitive prisoners under Sections 143/148/149/353/224/427/332/333/436/34 of the Penal Code-1860 with Konabari Police Station in Gazipur district.
