Gopalganj Jubo League leader held over July Uprising murder case in city

DHAKA, Sept 11, 2025 (BSS) - Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Awami Jubo League General Secretary SM Firoz Mahmud, a suspected accused in the Salauddin Sumon murder case during the July Uprising, has been arrested from the capital's Agargaon area.

A team of Khilgaon Police Station of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Mahmud from West Agargaon area of ??the capital around 6:15 pm on Wednesday, said a police press release.

According to Khilgaon Police Station, thousands of students and the public were marching in front of the South Banasree No. 2 Jame Mosque in support of the anti-discrimination movement on July 19, 2024.

At that time, leaders and activists of Awami League and its associate organizations opened fire on the procession indiscriminately. 

Salauddin Sumon was shot and died on the spot. 

In this incident, the victim's wife, Fatma Akhter Toma, filed a murder case with Khilgaon Police Station on July 6, 2025.
