DHAKA, Oct 30, 2025 (BSS) - The Financial Crime Unit (FCU) of the Criminal Investigation Department's (CID) has detected unusual transactions amounting to Taka 1,208 crore in various bank accounts in the name of former lawmaker Tanvir Shakil Joy and individuals and organizations linked to his interests.

The CID has frozen Taka 3.28 crore from the related accounts following a court order, said a press release of the force.

The frozen funds were held in accounts belonging to Tanvir Shakil Joy, his mother Laila Arjumand Banu, wife Sabrina Sultana Chowdhury, and other family members across multiple banks.

Initial investigations have revealed that Tanvir Shakil Joy allegedly earned the massive amount through fraud, forgery, extortion, organized crime, and money laundering abroad.

Further findings indicate that there are a total of 96 bank accounts in the names of Tanvir Shakil Joy, his wife Sabrina Sultana Chowdhury, mother Laila Arjumand Banu, brother Tamal Mansur, and other relatives.

A review of the account statements from the time these accounts were opened shows unusual transactions totaling Taka 1,208 crore, the press release said.

Preliminary evidence suggests that Tanvir Shakil Joy and his brother Tamal Mansur abused their positions and accumulated a vast amount of illegal wealth through tender fraud, extortion, sand mining, and recruitment business in various projects.

It is believed that a significant portion of the illicit funds was laundered abroad and invested under the names of family members as movable and immovable assets, the release also said.

At present, the Financial Crime Unit is conducting an extensive money laundering investigation against the mentioned individuals.

The investigation is ongoing, with search operations underway across different parts of the country to trace immovable and movable properties linked to the alleged persons.

The CID stated that its investigation and operations are continuing to uncover complete information about the crime, identify all involved parties, and bring them to justice.
