DHAKA, Nov 4, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Azaz today said that it was necessary to remove injustice and chaos from the city, like the oppressor.
“We have just overthrown the oppressor from this country; we must also remove injustice and chaos from our city,” he said while inaugurating two newly constructed gates at Agargaon and Pragati Sarani in the capital.
Azaz said the DNCC constructed two gates, 'Mukti Toran' and 'Swadhinata Toran,' to commemorate the anti-fascist July Uprising. ‘Mukti Toran’ was installed on Justice Syed Mahbub Morshed Road at Agargaon, and ‘Swadhinata Toran’ was set in front of Badda Buddhist Temple on Pragati Sarani.
The administrator said, “These gates (Torons) will remind us of the anti-fascist struggle. People from all classes and professions of the country participated in the movement. These structures have been built to preserve the memory of the movement and enrich the aesthetics of the city.”
He also said that there should be some structures in the city that would remind people of past struggles and also enhance the beauty of the city.
He said that keeping the city unclean, filling it with banners and posters, or destroying greenery is also a form of oppression, adding, “It is now our responsibility to protect our city from these elements, and we are doing that work.”
While inaugurating the ‘Swadhinata Toran’ (Freedom Gate) on Pragati Sarani, the administrator said, "Teachers and students of private universities in this area participated in the July Movement with immense courage. The gate has been built here to remember and recognize their struggle.”
DNCC Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md Moin Uddin, Regional Executive Officer of Region-3 Md Julkar Nayan, and Regional Executive Officer of Region-5 Md Shadequr Rahman, along with other officials, were present.
