DHAKA, Nov 4, 2025 (BSS) - The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have issued show-cause notices to 403 leaders of banned Chhatra League in connection with the July 15, 2024 attacks on students on the university campus.

The accused have been asked to reply within seven working days, failing which unilateral action will be taken.

Certificates of those who have already completed their studentship will be recommended for cancellation, said DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed.

The university’s Public Relations Office issued a press release today stating that the notice was signed on November 2 by Saifuddin Ahmed, Proctor and Member Secretary of the investigation committee formed to probe the unlawful and violent incidents during the July movement on campus.

According to the release, 128 students were found involved in the violent and unlawful incidents between July 15 and August 5, 2024, and they were temporarily expelled as per the report of a probe committee.

The probe committee on its second meeting found involvement of a total 403 students including the 128.

The notice asked the accused to provide written explanation within seven working days to proctor office why they should not be permanently expelled from the university. Otherwise, action will be taken unilaterally in accordance with the university rules.

When contacted, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s DU unit General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon said, “We have always demanded justice for those who tortured students. We will review the list and give our formal reaction later.”

An analysis of the list shows the names, departments, designations in BCL, halls, and sessions of the accused.

The list includes Chhatra League Central President Saddam Hossain, General Secretary Sheikh Wali Enan, DU unit President Majharul Kabir Shayon, and General Secretary Tanvir Hasan Saikat, along with all hall unit presidents and general secretaries.

However, the name of Ziaur Rahman Hall General Secretary Hasibul Islam Shanto is absent. The list also includes Eden College Chhatra League President Tamanna Jesmin Riva.

Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said those who have completed their studentship will have their certificates recommended for cancellation.

“The final decision will be made at the Syndicate meeting,” he added, noting that the notice took effect from Tuesday.
