CHATTOGRAM, Nov 6, 2025 (BSS) - Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain today said the port city will be developed into a green, clean, healthy, safe and sustainable city through a coordinated plan aimed at improving civic life and the environment.

He said a new healthcare system has already been introduced to deliver medical services directly to residents' doorsteps, while special facilities like breastfeeding corners for mothers are being established across the city.

Dr. Shahadat made the remarks while addressing the first anniversary of the "Clean, Green, Healthy and Safe City" initiative at the International Convention Hall this afternoon.

The mayor said door-to-door garbage collection has started to ensure cleanliness and discourage the dumping of household waste on streets and in drains. "We are committed to stopping indiscriminate waste disposal that clogs drains and rivers, worsening the city's waterlogging problem," he added.

He said the waterlogging situation in Chattogram has deteriorated by about 50 percent in the past year due to poor waste management, urging citizens to be more conscious about proper garbage disposal.

The mayor also highlighted the ongoing development activities under the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), saying construction work on 50 to 60 major city roads will be completed this year. "Tenders for 14 roads have already been finalized," he informed.

Chattogram generates around 3,000 metric tonnes of waste every day, of which the CCC currently collects about 2,200 tonnes. "We are taking steps to manage the remaining waste by expanding collection capacity," he said.

To enhance civic services, Dr. Shahadat announced that the CCC will launch the "Amar Chattogram" mobile app in December, offering 10 integrated services, including health, education, and a public complaints system.

He said a Korean company has been contracted to produce biogas from waste, while discussions are ongoing with foreign investors to produce green diesel.

The mayor further said the CCC has conducted awareness programmes to prevent breast and liver cancer and launched campaigns in schools and colleges to curb the rise of juvenile gangs.

CCC Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Amin presided over the function, which was attended by Additional Divisional Commissioner Nurulullah Nuri, Chattogram Range DIG Ahsan Habib Palash, CMP Commissioner Hasan Habib Aziz, CDA Chairman Engineer Md Nurul Karim, Chattogram WASA Managing Director Monowara Begum, and Chattogram Press Club Member Secretary Jahidul Karim Kochi, among others.
