River Police seizes 21 million meters of illegal nets, arrest 310

DHAKA, Nov 6, 2025 (BSS) - Over the past seven days, the River Police have carried out extensive operations across the country aimed at protecting national fisheries resources and ensuring the safety of waterways.

During the operations, the River Police seized 2,19,37,360 meters of illegal fishing nets, 4,024 kilograms of fish, and 110 kilograms of jellied shrimp, said a press release. 

In addition, 332 bushes obstructing river channels were cleared to improve navigability.

Legal actions were also taken against offenders. Ninety Seven bulkheads were prosecuted in the Naval Court, and four dredgers were seized for operating without valid documentation.

In total, 310 individuals were arrested, and 35 cases were filed under various laws. These included 17 under the Fisheries Act, 2 under the Balumahal Act, 6 unnatural death cases, 3 under the Narcotics Control Act, 1 under the Mineral Resources Act, 4 under the Special Powers Act, and 2 murder cases.

The River Police recovered 12 bodies during the week-long operation.

The Naval Police reaffirmed their commitment to continue such enforcement drives to preserve the country's aquatic resources, prevent illegal activities, and maintain safety across national waterways.

It is to be noted that the seized illegal nets and jellied shrimp were destroyed, while the seized fish were distributed to orphanages in accordance with existing regulations.
