
DHAKA, Nov 9, 2025 (BSS) – Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) detective branch has arrested 25 leaders and activists of now disbanded Awami League (AL) and its affiliated organizations amid an escalated security vigil throughout the capital.
A DMP statement said they were arrested in 24 hours ending this morning under a series of coordinated drives from different parts of the capital on charges of staging flash marches on city streets while it also named the 25 activists they arrested.
“The detainees are accused of organizing unauthorized gatherings and attempting to resume political programs that had been prohibited by authorities, the DMP said.
Among the relatively senior local leaders and activists arrested overnight included AL’s former treasurer of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar unit ABM Nurul Haque alias Chhoton Chowdhury (69), Dhaka South’s AL Member M Gias Uddin Khokon (70) and Noakhali district AL convening committee member Md Shamsuddin Ahmed Selim (62),
The rests are: Naopara Union Sramik League president Rupchan Bepari, Dhaka South Chhatra League (BCL) science affairs secretary Abrar Khan Tahmid alias Tahmid Ashraf, BCL member Raihan Khan Azad, , Mirpur AL’s assistant general Md Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, Bhashantek Thana Jubo League Member Md Sirajul Islam alias Ahmad Ali, former vice-president of Ward 33 of Mohammadpur Thana Md Jasim alias Billal, organizing secretary of Matsyajibi League of Gendaria Md Mahbub Rahman, joint secretary of Shyampur Md Jahangir Alam, former vice-chairman of Meghna Upazila of Cumilla District and AL member Engineer Abul Kalam (40), vice-president of Ashulia BCL Mohammad Shahjalal, Jubo League’s Rayerbag unit secretary Md Delwar Hossain alias Palash, AL’s Dingamanik Union general secretary at Naria of Shariatpur Yunus Sardar, general secretary of Paltan Thana Jubo League Md Akbar Hossain, former president of Paltan Thana Jubo League Md Abu Sayeed, Lakhai upazila Krishak League joint secretary in Habiganj Raihan Uddin Rehan, AL’s relief and social welfare sub-committee assistant secretary Md Mejbah Uddin Prince, Sylhet City Jubo Mohila League general secretary Maryam Parveen, Dhaka North joint secretary Md Nasir Sarkar, Netrokona district Sramik League member Ali Hossain, Cumilla district Nikli Union AL general secretary Md Manik Khandaker and Barguna district’s Taltoli thana Jubo League joint convener Md Habibur Rahman Kamal.
The DMP statement said the arrested individuals were currently being interrogated, and further legal action will follow after initial investigations.
DB officials reaffirmed that strict measures will continue against any organization or group violating the current ban on political activities of Awami League in the capital, emphasizing that maintaining public order and security remained as their top priority.
