CHITTAGONG, November 14, 2025 (BSS) - BNP standing committee member and former minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury today said the key demand of the people of the country is now a festive election.
"Everyone wants to vote and choose their representatives. The country's accumulated problems can only be solved by a government that has been elected by the people. Our focus must be on bringing about political change," he told journalists after a seminar organised by the Chattogram Travel Forum at Hotel Peninsula in Chattogram.
He stressed that there is no need to divert attention to minor issues when the priority should be on holding elections.
"The main demand of the people in Bangladesh is restoring democratic order through a fair election. They await the chance to elect their representatives and form a parliament and government that will be accountable to them. That accountability has been missing for the past 15-16 years," he said.
The senior BNP leader added that through voting, "we can establish a government answerable to citizens. That is the people's desire to reinstate democracy in Bangladesh."
He stressed the role of law-enforcement and the judiciary in maintaining order, noting it should not be the exclusive domain of any political party. "Law-enforcement agencies are responsible for maintaining law and order, the judiciary is there to make judgments. We have already set up a neutral department and will give the judiciary more institutional support in the future," he said.
Amir Khasru said the government has made decisions and the people will ultimately have the final say via a referendum.
"BNP will not interfere," he added.
On ongoing cases against fallen fascist Sheikh Hasina, he said the outcome will depend on the judiciary and it is important for everyone to trust the judicial process.
Earlier at the event he had pledged that if BNP comes to power, free primary services will be provided to all.
After the seminar's inauguration, he toured stalls at the "Medical Value Travel Summit," where healthcare institutions, medical-value-travel facilitators, corporate representatives and travel-agency officials from China, Malaysia, Thailand, India and Bangladesh were present.
