DHAKA, Dec 14, 2025 (BSS) - Martyred Intellectuals Day was observed today with due dignity at the Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) in Trishal, Mymensingh.

Marking the day, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Jahangir Alam lowered the national flag to half-mast in front of the new administrative building in the morning while the national anthem was played. Treasurer Professor Dr Zainul Abedin Siddiqui hoisted the black flag as a mark of mourning.

Later, the Vice-Chancellor placed a floral wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial, Chiro Unnoto Momo Shir, on behalf of the university family to pay deep respect to the martyred intellectuals. Wreaths were also placed by the hall provosts and the Teachers' Association.

A discussion was subsequently held at the conference room of the old administrative building. The programme began with a minute of silence in memory of the martyred intellectuals.

Speaking at the discussion, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Jahangir Alam said December 14 is a day of deep mourning for the nation. "Fifty-four years ago, just two days before the final victory, the brightest sons of this soil were brutally killed," he said, adding that the loss of intellectuals during the nine-month Liberation War still remains an unhealed wound.

He said that the country could have progressed even further had those intellectuals been alive.

Treasurer Professor Dr Zainul Abedin Siddiqui and Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration Professor Dr Sakhawat Hossain Sarkar spoke as special guests.

The discussion was presided over by the Convener of the Martyred Intellectuals Day Celebration Committee and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Professor Dr AHM Kamal.

Registrar (Acting) Professor Dr Md Mizanur Rahman, President of the Teachers' Association Professor Dr Tushar Kanti Saha, and Provost of Dolon-Chapa Hall Umme Farhana also addressed the programme.

The event was moderated by the Provost of Agni-Beena Hall, Md Harunur Rashid.

University Proctor, hall provosts, teachers, officers, employees and students were present on the occasion.
