DHAKA, Jan 05, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today showed Awami League praesidium member and former member of parliament (MP) Kazi Zafarullah arrested in a case lodged over the killing of one Md Shahjahan during the 2024 July Mass Uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order as the police produced the accused before the court and pleaded to show him arrested in the case. The court, after that, sent Zafarullah back to jail.

According to the case documents, Md Shahjahan joined a peaceful demonstration in the Mohakhali Flyover area on July 19, 2024, when the cadres of Awami League and its front organisations attacked the protesters. They fired multiple shots at the protesters. Shahjahan was shot twice, one on his chest and another in his abdomen.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where he died of his injuries four days later. His mother, Sajeda Begum, filed the case on December 18, 2024, with Banani Police Station.

Kazi Zafarullah was arrested in the city's Gulshan area on September 18, 2024, and has been in jail since then.
