Bangladesh Navy rescues floating boat with 20 fishermen

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 30, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Navy in its regular drive today rescued a floating boat with 20 fishermen in the Bay of Bengal. 

Bangladesh Navy ships are conducting regular patrols in the Bay of Bengal to secure the country's maritime borders and establish good governance at sea. 

During regular patrols today, the Navy ship 'BNS Surma' near Kutubdia received information of a fishing boat floating in the sea with a broken engine through an emergency telegraph at about 06:00 am, an ISPR press release said. 

On information, the Bangladesh Navy ship 'Surma' reached the spot to rescue the boat. The boat, which was floating in the sea near Kutubdia, was quickly rescued along with 20 fishermen. At that time, the rescued fishermen were provided with first aid and necessary food items.

The crew of the rescued boat said on January 19, 2026, they set out from Chattogram with the boat for fishing.

Later, at approximately 0400 hours on January 28, 2026, 10-12 miscreants attacked the fishing boat, arriving in another boat, brandishing local arms. At that time, the miscreants took the fishermen hostage, looted the personal belongings of the fishermen including the fish, four drums of diesel, gas cylinders and damaged the boat's engine.
