Massive haul of illegal fishing nets in five-day nationwide operation

DHAKA Feb 19, 2026 (BSS) - In a sweeping five-day nationwide crackdown, the River Police seized a massive quantity of banned fishing nets and arrested 64 individuals in operations aimed at protecting the country’s fisheries resources and ensuring safety on waterways.

According to a press release, the River Police recovered a staggering 2,13,34,330 meters of illegal fishing nets during coordinated drives across multiple rivers and coastal areas. 

Alongside the nets, authorities seized 2,409 kilograms of fish and 300 kilograms of jellied shrimps. 

During the operations, officials found that 23 bulkheads were operating without valid documentation. As a result, prosecutions were filed against them in the Naval Court.

In total, 26 cases were registered over the five-day period, including 19 under the Fisheries Act and seven under the Reckless Driving Act. Authorities confirmed that 64 accused individuals were arrested in connection with these violations.

The River Police also reported the recovery of three dead bodies during the course of the operations, though further details were not immediately disclosed.

Officials stated that the seized illegal nets and jellied shrimps were destroyed in accordance with regulations. 

The confiscated fish deemed fit for consumption were distributed to local orphanages.

The River Police reaffirmed their commitment to continuing such operations to safeguard fisheries resources, prevent illegal activities on waterways, and maintain law and order across the country’s river systems.
