NARAIL, Feb 26, 2026 (BSS) -The 90th birth anniversary of Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh was observed in the district today with due respect and solemnity through a series of commemorative programmes.
The day’s events began at 8:00 am with Quran recitation at the Bir Shrestha Shaheed Lance Naik Nur Mohammad Sheikh Library and Memorial Museum auditorium. A rally was brought out at 10:30 am, followed by wreath-laying and a guard of honour at 11:00 am at the memorial of Lance Naik Nur Mohammad Sheikh.
A discussion meeting was later held at 11:30 am at the library and memorial museum auditorium.
Among those present at different programmes were Deputy Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Abdul Salam, Chief Executive Officer of the Zila Parishad Md. Asaduzzaman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Ahsan Mahmud Russell, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer T.M. Rahsin Kabir, Additional Superintendent of Police Noor-e Alam Siddiqui, and the martyr’s son, SM Golam Mostafa Kamal.
A special prayer meeting was also held seeking eternal peace for the departed soul of the valiant freedom fighter.
Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh was born on February 26, 1936, in the village of Mahishkhola (now Noor Mohammadnagar) under Chandibarpur union of Narail Sadar upazila. The village was officially renamed Noor Mohammad Nagar on March 18, 2008, in honour of the war hero.
He joined the then East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) on March 14, 1959, which is now known as the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). After serving for a long time at the Dinajpur border, he was transferred to the Jashore sector on July 10, 1970, and was later promoted to Lance Naik.
In 1971, he took part in the Liberation War under Sector No-8, covering the Jashore region. Under the leadership of Captain Nazmul Huda, he fought bravely against Pakistani forces in the Boyra area of the Kashipur border in Sharsha upazila of Jashore.
On September 5, 1971, during a fierce battle at Goalhati and Chutipur in Jashore, when his fellow fighter Nannu Mia was critically injured, Nur Mohammad Sheikh advanced towards the enemy carrying a light machine gun (LMG) and his wounded comrade on his shoulder, continuing to fire. Despite being seriously wounded by a mortar shell, he pressed on with remarkable courage and determination.
Eventually, he embraced martyrdom while resisting the occupying forces and protecting the lives and arms of his fellow fighters.
He was laid to rest in Kashipur, Sharsha upazila of Jashore. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery and supreme sacrifice in the Liberation War, he was awarded the country’s highest gallantry award, “Bir Shrestha.”
