DHAKA, March 2, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator valiant freedom fighter Abdus Salam today said there is no scope to deny the courageous and significant role of ASM Abdur Rab in history.
"Even if history is temporarily distorted, it cannot be changed or erased," he told a discussion organised by Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) at the Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club on the occasion of March 2 Flag Hoisting Day.
Abdus Salam said, "March 2 is a historic day. BNP does not believe in distorting history." To give democracy an institutional shape, he said, all must work together in unity. Alongside allowing the government elected by the people's vote to function, cooperation is needed to implement necessary reforms.
He said the country had experienced a prolonged 17-year period without democracy, during which many people lost valuable years of their lives. Now, he added, an opportunity has been created to institutionalise democracy.
Despite differences among political parties, he stressed the need to maintain unity on issues of national interest, democracy and resistance against extremism. He underscored the importance of giving the government time and support to implement reform programmes.
To ensure the country's progress, the DSCC administrator urged all not to pursue division but to work towards establishing democracy and strengthening state institutions.
The discussion, chaired by JSD Senior Vice-President Tania Rob, was addressed, among others, by President of Nagorik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna, President of Rashtra Sanskar Andolon Hasnat Kaiyum, and Gonoforum President Advocate Dr Subrata Chowdhury.
