Coast Guard detains 37 fishermen in Bay of Bengal

DHAKA, March 6, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Coast Guard has detained 37 fishermen along with three illegal artisanal trolling boats, trolling nets and a large quantity of marine fish during a drive in the Bay of Bengal.

The information was shared today in a press release signed by Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon.

On information, the Coast Guard ship Sonar Bangla conducted a raid in the afternoon on March 4 in the deep sea area, approximately 20 nautical miles southwest of the Mongla Fairway Buoy. During the operation, three illegal artisanal trolling boats were seized, said the press release.

Upon searching the seized vessels, 900 meters of trolling nets valued at approximately Tk 8 lakh and an estimated 2,000 kg of marine fish were recovered, leading to the detention of the 37 fishermen.

Later, in the presence of the Mongla Upazila Fisheries Officer, the seized artisanal trolling boats and other evidence, along with the detained fishermen, were handed over to Mongla Police Station for further legal action.
