Nine train coaches derail in Santahar, over fifty injured

NAOGAON, March 18, 2026 (BSS) - Nine coaches of a train named Nil Sagar Express derailed in Santahar of Bogura, adjacent to Naogaon and more than fifty passengers are reported injured in the accident today.

The accident occurred around 2:00 pm when the Chilhati, Nilphamari bound intercity train reached Bagbari area near Santahar Junction Station after departing from Dhaka.  

Three units of the Fire Service rushed to the scene and are continuing rescue operations.

Ahead of the upcoming Eid, hundreds of passengers were traveling by the Nil Sagar train via Santahar to different districts. 

As usual, repair work was ongoing on the railway track near Bagbari adjacent to Santahar Station. 

Before the train could comprehend the situation, it reached the spot and nine coaches derailed. 

The derailed coaches included AC chair, Shovon chair, and a power car. Fire Service units rescued 62 passengers from the spot and sent them to different hospitals for treatment. 

Many passengers had already left on their own. However, no one can specify the exact number of injured.

Santahar Station Master Khadija Khatun said it is not yet possible to say how the incident occurred; causes of detail will be known later, as the train driver is not present at the scene.

Abuzar Gaffar, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Naogaon Sadar Hospital, said that so far 10 injured persons have been admitted to the hospital, while 30 others were given primary treatment and released.
