Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman passes away

DHAKA, April 17, 2026 (BSS) - Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman passed away this morning while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the capital. 

He was 58.

The senior government official died at 6:25am following complications that developed during his hospitalization.

The Ministry of Commerce officially confirmed the news, expressing deep condolences and profound grief over the loss.

Mahbubur Rahman was admitted to Square Hospital on April 13 after experiencing a decline in his health and a low platelet count, where he was eventually diagnosed with Malaria.

A veteran of the civil service, Mahbubur Rahman was an official of the 13th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Customs and Excise cadre. 

Throughout a career spanning several decades, he held various pivotal roles within the government bureaucracy. 

He assumed his most recent posting as Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce on February 25, 2025, a position in which he served until his death.

Mahbubur Rahman is survived by his wife and three daughters. 

His passing is deeply mourned by his family, as well as a vast circle of colleagues and well-wishers who remember him for his professional dedication.
