According to a report of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the heart disease related deaths have increased alarmingly in the country in recent years.

According to the report, on an average, 562 people die every day in the country due to heart disease. On a yearly basis, around 9,92,736 new patients are being diagnosed with heart-related conditions equivalent to roughly 2,720 new cases daily.

Cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks, now account for 21.12% of all deaths in the country. At present, an estimated 10.26 million people in the country are living with some form of heart disease, the report added.

The data also reveals a disparity between the urban and rural populations. The death rate in the urban areas stands at 24.09%, significantly higher than the 15.07% recorded in the rural areas, indicating greater risk in city environments.

Particularly concerning is the sharp rise in heart attacks among the young people, a trend experts describe as highly alarming.

Health specialists attribute this surge to multiple factors including lifestyle changes, unhealthy diets, obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes and a lack of physical activity.

These findings highlight the urgent need for public awareness, preventive healthcare measures and lifestyle changes to address the growing cardiovascular health crisis in Bangladesh, Dr Uzzwal added.
