Two arrested over stealing Saudi Riyals from hajj camp

DHAKA, May 1, 2026 (BSS) - Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the theft of Saudi riyals from a Hajj pilgrim couple at Ashkona Hajj Camp in the capital.

The police also recovered 17,500 riyals and Tk 90,000 from the arrestees.

Of the 22,000 Saudi riyals stolen, 17,500 riyals have been recovered. The arrested individuals are Habibur Rahman and Nadim.

The information was disclosed at a briefing held at the Hajj Camp in Ashkona. 

Hajj Office Director Md Lokman Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Uttara Division) of DMP Mirza Tareq Ahmed Beg and Matlab Circle ASP Jabir Husnain Sanib, along with other senior officials were present at the press briefing.

On April 22, 22,000 Saudi riyals and Tk 10,000 were stolen from the bag of Hajj pilgrim Iman Ali at the camp.

Following the incident, Iman Ali's son filed a case with Airport Police Station in Dhaka against unidentified individuals.

Analyzing various data, police conducted a drive in Matlab of the capital last night and arrested key suspect Habibur Rahman.

Based on his information, Nadim was later arrested from the Station Road area of Tongi. 

Acting on further information, law enforcers conducted raids at two residences of the 'alleged mastermind' Abdul Mannan, but he could not be found. 

Subsequently, 17,500 Saudi riyals were recovered from the house of Mannan's elder daughter's husband, and Tk 90,000 was seized from the house of his second wife.
