CHATTOGRAM, May 18, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has dismissed the allegations of removing graffiti related to July uprising as 'blatant lies' and politically motivated propaganda ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) office today, the mayor said he had neither issued any instruction nor intended to remove any graffiti related to the movement.
He said the conservancy department of Chattogram City Corporation routinely clears posters and repaints public walls as part of regular city beautification work. Areas such as Tiger Pass had long been covered with posters, which are periodically cleaned under routine maintenance.
The mayor said he supports the spirit of the July uprising and referred to Wasim Akram, described as a martyr of the anti-discrimination movement in Chattogram, as an inspiration.
He also suggested that graffiti in the city should be more planned and artistic, proposing collaboration with art college students. He expressed willingness to support such initiatives through personal contributions as well as City Corporation funding.
Dr. Shahadat said he had earlier taken steps to assist injured individuals during the July uprising, including ensuring treatment when some hospitals were reluctant and visiting Chittagong Medical College Hospital on August 6, where he also provided financial assistance to several injured persons.
On his tenure, the mayor said he is serving lawfully under court directives and the current legal framework, with his term continuing until 2029.
"This city belongs to all of us. Our goal is to build a safe and attractive Chattogram. We do not want any conflict," he said.
