DHAKA, June 8, 2026 (BSS) - Nandail Upazila Health Complex in Mymensingh has achieved a major milestone in healthcare delivery with the successful performance of a complex paraumbilical hernia mesh repair surgery for the first time at the facility.

The advanced procedure was carried out following a special directive from State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury, marking a new phase in expanding surgical services at the upazila-level hospital.

Although the hospital had previously been providing minor surgical services on a regular basis, this was the first time a complex surgical operation of this kind was conducted at the facility.

The surgery took place at the newly modernised operation theatre, where a patient successfully underwent paraumbilical hernia repair on the opening day of advanced surgical services.

A total of 10 patients received surgical treatment on the same day, alongside routine procedures. Hospital authorities confirmed that all operations were completed successfully and that the patients are currently in stable condition.

Speaking to BSS, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer of Nandail, Dr. Shamima Sultana, said the introduction of advanced surgical procedures at the hospital would significantly reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment.

She noted that, under the guidance and encouragement of the state minister, the hospital is now capable of providing a wider range of specialized services, including Caesarean sections and surgeries for complex anorectal conditions such as piles, fissures, and fistulas.

On the first day of the expanded service, 75 patients received specialized surgical consultations at the outpatient department. A structured schedule has been prepared to ensure timely operations for the remaining patients.

The hospital's first paraumbilical hernia mesh repair surgery was performed by Assistant Professor of Surgery Dr. Kazi Sharifur Rahman Sajeeb, with anaesthesia support provided by Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. Apurba Kanchan Majumdar.

Hospital authorities have also announced a 24-hour emergency hotline (01730324528) for urgent healthcare services.
