Man sent to jail over theft of PMO red telephone cable

DHAKA, June 12, 2026 (BSS) - A Dhaka court today ordered the imprisonment of 
a man named Mahbub Hasan (34) in a case filed over the theft of copper wires 
of the red telephone connection of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in the 
Secretariat.

Police produced him before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka today. 

The investigating officer sought his detention in jail until the completion 
of the investigation. After hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam of 
Dhaka ordered his detention.

Earlier, on June 5, Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Hasan Shahadat granted a 
five-day remand for two other arrested accused, Ranjan Chandra (26) and 
Rizakul Islam (32) in the same case. 

After completion of their remand, they are currently in jail custody.

According to the case statement, between May 22 and June 1, copper cables 
(100/0.4 pair BTCL cables), measuring approximately 110 metres and worth 
about Taka 105,000, were stolen from the roofs of buildings 1, 2 and 3 of the 
old Secretariat building.

On June 4, the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) filed a 
case with Shahbagh Police Station against unknown persons over the theft.
