RAJSHAHI, June 16, 2026 (BSS) - US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen today expressed his admiration for Rajshahi's renowned traditional 'Kalai Ruti' after tasting the local delicacy during a visit to the city.
"Darun moja! (It's really delicious)," the ambassador said after enjoying the popular food item, which has long been regarded as one of Rajshahi's culinary trademarks.
In the afternoon, Christensen visited Rumon Kalai House, a well-known eatery located in the Uposhohor New Market area of the city. During the visit, he closely observed the preparation of Kalai Ruti and showed keen interest in the traditional cooking process.
The ambassador captured photographs of the bread-making activities on his mobile phone and also took selfies at the restaurant.
Besides Kalai Ruti, he watched the preparation of eggplant mash and goose meat and learned about the ingredients and cooking methods used in the dishes.
Later, accompanied by his wife, the ambassador enjoyed a lunch featuring Kalai Ruti, goose meat and eggplant mash.
Speaking to journalists after the meal, the envoy described the dishes as exceptionally tasty and said he was highly impressed by the flavours of Rajshahi's traditional cuisine.
"The taste of the Kalai Ruti, goose meat and eggplant mash was extraordinary. I really liked this traditional food of Rajshahi," he said.
When news of the ambassador's arrival spread, a crowd of curious locals gathered at Kalai House. Many flocked there to catch a glimpse. Tight security was in place during the visit, and officials from the US Embassy accompanied him.
Rajshahi's traditional Kalai Ruti is gaining popularity beyond the country's borders, even among foreign diplomats - and the US ambassador's visit is seen as another example of that.
