HC sets record by disposing of 7,853 old cases in a day

DHAKA, July 25, 2026 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) has set a record by 
disposing of 7,853 long-pending criminal miscellaneous cases in a single day 
on July 23, the highest number of such cases disposed of in a day in the 
court's history.

The High Court disposed of the cases through 10 criminal motion benches, as 
part of a special drive launched following the directive of Chief Justice 
Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, an apex court release said here today.

A total of 42,699 old cases have been disposed of in nine working days since 
May 7. Of these, 35,792 were old criminal miscellaneous cases.

Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam earlier said the 
special initiative, undertaken to ensure speedy justice for litigants, reduce 
the case backlog and enhance the efficiency of the judiciary, has resulted in 
the disposal of a significant number of old cases.
