NAOGAON, May 24, 2025 (BSS) - After a gap of thirty years, the Deputy Commissioner Gold Cup Football Tournament is set to begin at the district stadium in Naogaon tomorrow (Sunday).

The district administration and the District Sports Association have already completed all necessary preparations. A total of 11 teams from different upazilas of the district will compete in the tournament, which will be held in a knockout format.

Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Khondaker Azim Ahmed is expected to inaugurate the event as the chief guest, Deputy Commissioner and District Sports Association President Mohammad Abdul Awal said.

Local sports enthusiasts believe that the tournament will help revive the festive atmosphere of football across the district.

As per the opening day's fixture, Porsha Upazila will take on Patnitala Upazila at 3pm.

The date of the final match will be announced later.

The Deputy Commissioner Gold Cup Football Tournament was last held between 1991 and 1994. Since then, it had remained suspended for three decades. The district administration has taken this initiative to encourage both current and future generations to engage in sports and to revitalize the activities of the District Sports Association.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Awal said there is no alternative to regular sports practice in building a healthy and talented nation.

"When a person gets the opportunity to play sports regularly, he gradually distances himself from harmful influences," he added.

He urged the people of Naogaon to extend their full cooperation to the district administration in this initiative.
