DHAKA, July 13, 2025 (BSS)—Bangladesh captain Liton Das credited a superb team effort for their record 83-run victory against Sri Lanka in the second T20 at Dambulla International Cricket Stadium today.
The victory, that was their largest ever against a Test playing nation saw them level the three-match series 1-1 after suffering a seven-wicket defeat in the first match.
Liton himself led the team from the front with a scintillating 50 ball-76 that helped the side post a challenging 177-7.
Liton also came to the game with a huge pressure to get back amongst runs after a series of failure in white-ball cricket of late.
“I have been trying to play good cricket, but that wasn't happening,” Liton said after the match, also crediting Shamim Patwari who played 26 ball-48.
Liton said Patwari’s free-flowing batting took the pressure off him.
“Credit goes to Shamim, the way he batted, it was amazing. It was a good pitch to bat on. You had to take time on that surface. You could capitalize later,” he said.
The captain said the turning point of the match was the run out dismissal of Kusal Mendis, inflicted by Patwari. Mendis demolished Bangladesh in the first game, striking 51 ball-73.
“That run-out by Shamim Patwari to remove Kusal Mendis was very important. He has been in very good form,” Liton, who was adjudged man of the match pointed out.
He had special praise for the bowlers like Rishad Hossain and Shoriful Islam. Rishad registered his career-best 3-18 while Shoriful took two wickets, giving away only 12 runs in three overs.
“He (Rishad) is a big factor. When he bowls well, we are always in. Shoriful also bowled really well,” he said.
Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka praised Bangladesh’s fielding effort and identified it as the key factor.
“We were undone by bad batting and such good fielding by Bangladesh,” Asalanka said.
“As I mentioned because of bad batting, losing those wickets were crucial. Those (Mendis' run-out) kind of things can happen in cricket.”
He, however, vowed to make a strong comeback in the series-deciding third game on Wednesday.
“We are in the same situation like we were in the ODIs. We need to come back stronger in the next game.”
