DHAKA, July 26, 2025 (BSS)—Bangladesh team management identified death over bowling as the area to be improved ahead of the T20 World Cup, slated to be held in India and Sri Lanka in early next year.
Captain Liton Das said the bowlers need to work on extensively in this area to increase their chance to do well in the showcase event.
“We are bowling well with the new ball but it’s the death overs bowling which is a matter of concern,” Liton said while assessing their performance against Pakistan.
They won the Pakistan series 2-1 for their back-to-back series victory in this format. Just a week ago, they won a series against Sri Lanka in away by same margin. On both occasions, they registered their first ever victory in this format against those two top cricketing nations.
Before that two consecutive series victory, Bangladesh lost six series in a row.
Bangladesh had the batting issues also, that Liton didn’t deny. But he said, “It’s the bowlers who eventually won the game,” he added.
“The team believes the same. Obviously, we have to bat well because but the bowlers have more chances to win the match,” he said.
In modern cricket, the cricketers utilized two phases of innings to pile on pressure on the opponents by scoring runs heavily. In the first six overs, that is considered as first powerplay, there is a fielding restriction which gave the batters a chance to go after the bowlers. The second powerplay is the last five overs where there is similar fielding restriction. The second powerplay is considered as death overs, where batters usually play all out cricket.
All of the teams in the world give more emphasis on keeping death over specialists to counter the batters. Bangladesh also have a death over specialist in Mustafizur Rahman but other than him, no one can build that reputation.
Bangladesh left out Mustafizur in the third T20 against Pakistan to see the other bowlers’ performance in the death overs. But the team management appeared not to be happy.
"We all know how deadly Mustafizur can be in the death overs, but for the others this, it is the time to improve in this area ahead of the World Cup,” Liton said, adding that if they can prepare other one as death over specialist, their chance to win more matches will be increased.
Liton revealed that they will rotate the bowlers, specially the pacers to keep them away from the injury ahead of the World Cup.
"Taskin has returned to T20s after a long time. You probably all know that if he keeps playing continuously, the chances of injury are higher for him," he said.
"The same goes for Shoriful - he had a groin injury during the Pakistan series (at their own backyard) and then again in Kandy, and even in Dambulla he faced similar problems."
Despite the middle order batters’ inconsistency, Liton backed them and also said that they have a ready back up for the players if they get injured.
"I believe that Towhid Hridoy, the way he bats, along with Jaker Ali and Shamim Pawary, they are currently Bangladesh's best middle-order batters," he said.
With the Pakistan series, Bangladesh ended a 40-day of cricket at a stretch. They will have good break before returning to have a camp for Asia Cup preparation.
