DHAKA, Aug 3, 2025 (BSS)-Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) coach Sohel Islam
urged the players to perform consistently for a long period to succeed in
International cricket.
His comment came in the wake of the players failure in International circuit
despite putting up string of good performances in the domestic level.
Sohel said what is imperative is to see players average and the amount of
runs he scored. He also emphasized on to judging the condition in which the
players made their runs.
'When a player wants to get a chance in the national team by playing domestic
cricket, his average needs to be good," Sohel said here today, adding the
consistency is mandatory.
In fact, Sohel wants the players to guard against complacency in case of just
doing well in one or two seasons.
'But in our country till now... we usually judge the success of players by
watching one or two matches. You will notice that our players are less
consistent," he said. " What we need to do is to be consistent and make the
league and tournament competitive."
Sohail is in favor of giving opportunities to cricketers considering the long
term success rather than considering just by his one or two centuries in
domestic cricket.
"I think it is also important for us to have a culture for this. How do we
evaluate a player in our country? If you look at India, domestic cricket is
very competitive there-they don't care about a hundred or two hundred runs
innings," Sohel said.
"We see that when we score a (century), we, the players, are also mentally
satisfied, the coach also. We have to see how consistently we are scoring in
domestic cricket.'
He further said: "Scoring big runs, scoring back-to-back runs, these are a
matter of habit. It is not that I cannot score runs in the next innings just
because I scored two hundreds in one match."
Sohel further spoke on consistency, saying: "We have noticed these and at the
same time there was talk that when a boy scores a hundred in two innings, he
should have scored runs in the next match as well."
"But we don't have such examples in our country that a boy is scoring in the
next match to after hitting runs in the previous match. There are such
examples in India. We are trying to get out of there. We are thinking of
making them practice like that.'
