WASHINGTON, Aug 4, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Indianapolis Colts running back Salvon Ahmed suffered a "severe leg injury" when a teammate brought him down in practice with an illegal "hip-drop" tackle, the NFL team said Sunday.

The training period came to a halt after undrafted free agent Trey Washington tackled Ahmed, using the hip-drop method in which a defender drops his weight on the ball carrier's lower body.

The technique was banned by the league last year.

Ahmed was clearly in pain as team medical staff tended him, placing an air cast on his leg before he was taken from the field on a cart.

"Thoughts and prayers with him right now, obviously (Ahmed) got a severe leg injury in practice," Colts coach Shane Steichen said.

"We don't encourage hip-drop tackles," Steichen added. "I know Trey's down in the dumps and I don't think he's trying to do that."

Ahmed's injury occurred in a "live" session of the practice, with full tackling allowed.

"We're just trying to create an edge," Steichen said. "Those (backups) are going to have to tackle come preseason."

After conferring with players, Steichen opted to complete the training session that ended with simulated two-minute situation drills.

"There's guys out here that need those reps to compete and get better," veteran linebacker Zaire Franklin said. "We've got to keep pushing ourselves."

Ahmed joined the Colts as a free agent earlier this year after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins.

"Seeing one of your brothers go down, it's obviously very tough," tight end Will Mallory said. "We're there for him in the ups and downs."
