RANGPUR, April 4, 2026 (BSS) - After completing harvest last week, farmers 
have produced 1,20,275 tonnes of mustard seeds in all five districts of 
Rangpur agricultural region during the 2025-2026 Rabi season. 
 
At the same time, farmers are currently happy getting rewarding prices 
between Taka 3,300 and Taka 3,800 per mound (every 40-kg) of the highly 
profitable oil seeds in the local markets.
 
Market sources said that the prices of mustard seeds may go up to Taka 4,500 
per mound in the coming months across the region.
 
Earlier, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) had set a record 
target of producing 1,46,281 tonnes of mustard seeds from 90,568 hectares of 
land for Rangpur region during the current 2025-2026 Rabi season.
 
The record target of producing mustard had been fixed aiming at attaining 
self-reliance on production of edible oils from locally produced mustard and 
other oilseeds.
 
The DAE, Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, Bangladesh 
Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) and Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear 
Agriculture (BINA) extended assistance to farmers to make the mustard 
cultivation programme a success. 
 
The government also distributed quality mustard seeds and fertilisers as 
special incentives among small and marginal farmers to cultivate mustard for 
expanding cultivation to enhance production of the crop.
 
"However, farmers had finally brought 78,045 hectares of land under mustard 
farming, which is 86.17 percent of the fixed farming target this time in the 
region," Additional Director of the DAE for Rangpur region Krishibid Md 
Shirajul Islam told BSS.
 
Due to crop diversification across the region and cultivation of potatoes and 
corn on more land, it was not possible to achieve the agricultural targets 
set for this season.
 
Being inspired by motivational activities being conducted by the DAE, farmers 
are showing interest in cultivating high yielding varieties of mustard like 
'Tori 7', BARI-9, BARI-14, BARI-15 and BINA-4 across the region to get high 
yields in recent years.
 
Talking to BSS, farmers Abdul Haque, Aminul Islam, Mansur Ali of different 
villages in Kawnia upazila of Rangpur said they got a bumper yield of mustard 
this season.
 
Farmers Nur Islam and Anwar Hossain of village Mohipur in Gangachara upazila 
and Mofizar Rahman of Dolapara village in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur also 
got bumper production of high varieties of mustard this season.
 
They sowed mustard seeds after harvesting short duration Aman rice on the 
same land to enhance crop intensity and reap more profits.
 
"We have cultivated Boro rice on the same land after harvesting mustard this 
season like in the previous years," Mofizar Rahman added.
