DHAKA, Feb 2, 2025 (BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Nahid Islam today said the young generation aspires to establish a merit-based and professional bureaucracy.

"Bureaucracy has been used for political purposes at various times in Bangladesh. In many cases, government officials have been promoted for political reasons, which are very unfortunate. It is time to come out of this culture. Therefore, the institutionalization of bureaucracy is obligatory," he told the 77th basic training programme for BCS cadre officials at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

The adviser emphasized that promotions in public service should be based on merit. Additionally, he stressed the need for reforming the performance appraisal system for government officials and employees.

Speaking on state reform, he said the government aims to lay the foundation for reform of the country. "To this end, various reform commissions have been formed," he added.

He further stated that reform initiatives will be undertaken based on discussions with political parties and recommendations from the reform commissions.

Recalling the July-August Mass Uprising, Nahid said, "Students led the movement, and the people with trust in the students took to the streets against fascism.

He urged the newly appointed officials to work with sincerity to build a new Bangladesh free from all forms of discrimination. Rector of the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre, Sayeed Mahbub Khan, along with other officials of the center, was present.
