DHAKA, Jan 14, 2025 (BSS) – A delegation of the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) met Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Administrator Anwar Hossain at the BGMEA Complex in the capital’s Uttara area yesterday.

The delegation included Thulsi Narayanaswamy, Director of International Advocacy at WRC; Manodeep Guha, Regional Director for South Asia; and Shaikat Mollik, WRC representative in Bangladesh.

During the meeting, the BGMEA Administrator briefed the WRC delegation on the current state of Bangladesh’s garment industry, including its challenges and opportunities especially the practical transformation of the industry in ensuring safety at workplace, development of labour standard, and improvement in environmental sustainability.

Anwar Hossain emphasised the need for fair pricing to make the industry more sustainable, mentioning that workers’ welfare is directly impacted by pricing policies, said a BGMEA press release.

He pointed out that the buyers' offered prices do not reflect the reality and rationality as production costs have gone up for various international and domestic factors.

The BGMEA Administrator said that Bangladesh has already gained recognition as a safe and ethical sourcing destination globally and thus urged the WRC leaders to press brands and buyers to pay fair prices.
