CHATTOGRAM, June 2, 2026 (BSS) - The New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), which is the largest container handling terminal operated by the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA), achieved a remarkable milestone by handling the highest number of containers in its history during May.

The port authority announced that the terminal processed 126,496 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) of containers in May, marking the highest volume handled in a single month in NCT's history.

“This achievement establishes a new benchmark by surpassing all prior monthly records,” said the port authority source.

Previously, in October, 2025, the NCT had set the record for the highest single-month container handling with 125,533 TEUs. At present, Chattogram Dry Dock Limited (CDDL) is managing NCT under the oversight of the port authority and the jurisdiction of the Bangladesh Navy.

Throughout May, the terminal handled an average of 4,081 TEUs of containers daily. Out of the total containers processed, 59,851 TEUs were designated for import, while 66,645 TEUs were for export.

This indicates a notable increase in both import and export trade activities.

Md. Nasir Uddin, the Personnel Officer of Chattogram Port, stated that since CDDL assumed operations of NCT on July 7, 2025, the terminal's activities have been expedited. With the efforts of the personnel assigned at the ship point, delivery point, appraisal point, C&F shed, and various entry and exit gates, the processes of unloading and loading containers have become swifter and more efficient, he added.
Currently, NCT is recognized as the largest terminal at Chattogram Port. This terminal, which spans approximately one kilometer, is capable of accommodating five vessels, regardless of size, simultaneously. It features four jetties, and nearly half of the total containers at the port are processed through this terminal. The terminal is equipped with a yard that utilizes advanced technology as backup facilities. Additionally, it has 14 gantry cranes designated for the loading and unloading of containers from the port's vessels.

Moreover, the terminal is fully equipped with all essential apparatus for the transfer of containers. Container ships also operate at the Chattogram Container Terminal (CCT) and the General Cargo Berth (GCB). The Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) is managed by the Saudi Arabia-based terminal operator, Red Sea Gateway Terminal. In 2025, a total of 3.41 million TEU containers were processed across the three terminals of Chattogram Port.

The port authority has allocated all funds to the New Mooring Container Terminal. During the tenure of the Awami League, Saif Power Tech, leveraging their political connections, extracted thousands of crores of taka from the terminal without making any investments, port sources said.

“No other domestic or international company was afforded such an opportunity. However, following the assumption of power by the interim government, steps were taken to remove the contentious Saif Power Tech from the NCT and to assign operations to a foreign company,” the source added.

Since that time, various factions have been advocating against the transfer of the port to foreign entities. Amidst this movement, the Navy-operated company CDDL was entrusted with the management of the NCT starting July 7, 2025. The port authority has stated that this accomplishment is the result of the collective efforts and professionalism exhibited by the chairman, members, officers, and employees of both the CPA and CDDL.

Sources assert that this achievement will enhance the capabilities of the nation's primary seaport, promote foreign trade, and contribute positively to the national economy.
